At meals with friends/family members etc., if I want to go to the toilet, what should I say to them as a gesture of social etiquette?

In a public situation, one would probably not say "go to the toilet," and in fact, one wouldn't necessarily enlighten one's companions on where one intends to go. (One also wouldn't say "Sorry.") "Excuse me, i'll be right back" would be both acceptable, and the likely, normal remark.

@WBYeats,
I don't know, it's your family.

At mealtimes people don't want to be reminded of bowel movements so various euphemisms tend to be employed. Pay a call, wash my hands, point Percy at the porcelain, ladies powder their noses etc. If you can't think of any it's acceptable, (in the UK at least) to say you need the toilet/lavatory.

If I am with good friends and/or family, I will usually say "excuse me, I'm just going to shake hands with the unemployed."

Or....I'm just going to.....

1. Water my horse.
2. Strain my spuds.
3. Squeeze my lemon.
4. Get something off my mind.

In formal settings, I would just say what Set has already suggested.

@WBYeats,
WBYeats, perhaps you've overlooked or not noticed a minor nicety, nay netiquette?
