Does " For one day spent, Cao Cao's cruelty to abet" mean "because any day that Hua Xin spent was to help/provoke Cao Cao's cruelty"?

Context:

Hua Xin furthered Cao Cao's foulest scheme:
Breaking down the wall, he seized the queen.
For one day spent, Cao Cao's cruelty to abet:
A name forever cursed, "Dragon Pate."

I don't know about any day. This is poetic hyperbole. It i saying that Hua Xin is cursed for a single day of abetting (helping) Cao Cao's cruelty. Romance of the Three Kingdoms, i take it.
