Used to call matinees the "sea of blue," in the theater days. Really is nothing like looking out from the control booth and seeing the house full of alternating bluish-white coifs and bald pates.

On a different but not important enough to start a new thread note: They found out that those Mexican tamarindo candies have lead in them because they are stored in lead glazed ceramic pots. They aren't allowed to be imported into the US anymore, so if you have a hoard you probably should stop eating them.

(too bad, they were tasty.)

If you have a hoard you should probably take them down to the black market -- you know, those stalls behind the Walmart. (Isn't that where the black market is?)

Drinking joins smoking as cancer risk
Monday, January 30, 2006; Posted: 9:44 a.m. EST

LONDON, England (Reuters) -- Along with smoking and chronic infections, alcohol consumption is an important cause of several types of cancer, researchers said on Monday.

Excessive drinking raises the risk of cancer of the mouth, larynx, oesophagus, liver, colon and breast. It may also be linked with cancer of the pancreas and lung.

"Alcohol is underestimated as a cause of cancer in many parts of the world," said Dr Paolo Boffetta of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in Lyon, France.

"A sizeable proportion of cancer today is due to alcohol intake and this is increasing in many regions, particularly in east Asia and eastern Europe," he added in an interview.

You're full of good news, ain't ya R_P? I read the original post in this thread to discover heavy social drinking is defined as more than 20 (women) to 25 (men) drinks per week. Yabba! At that level there's no wonder there's an effect. I can drink a whole lot more and still be a social drinker - anybody want to join me at Eva's?

As for the cancer link, I'm not surprised. Too much of anything causes cancer - even the polluted air we breath and the water we drink. I'm becoming more and more convinced that each of us is predisposed to some potentially fatal disease. It just comes down to whether or not our predispositions get triggered. Moderation in all things seems to be the ticket.

but then again perhaps death (in western civilizations) is the leading cause of statistics.

I think they're both dys's fault.

In fact, I'm pretty sure of it.

THE WHO's "Too Much Of Anything"
I think these hands have felt a lot,
I don't know, what have I touched,
I think these eyes have seen a lot,
I don't know, maybe they've seen too much.

I think this brain has thought a lot,
Searching, trying to find the crutch,
I think this heart has bled once too often,
This time it's bled a bit too much.

Too much of anything, too much for me,
Too much of everything gets too much for me.

I can't remember before '49,
But I know that '48 was there,
My ears let in what I should speak out,
Hmmm, there's something in the air.

Ooh, I've overloaded on my way,
Bye, bye, bye, bye, you better keep in touch.
Think your ears hear a whole lot of music,
And like me they've caught a bit too much.

Too much of anything, is too much for me,
Too much of everything gets too much for me.

I think these hands have felt a lot,
I don't know, what have I touched,
I think these eyes have seen a lot,

Too much of anything, is too much for me,
Too much of everything gets too much for me.
