Does nut below refer to "usually large hard-shelled seed"?

Context:

Nut Consumption and Mortality
November 21, 2013 | Y. Bao and Others
In this analysis of data from two large studies, the more nuts were consumed, the lower the risk of death. People who ate a serving (28 g) of nuts seven or more times a week had a 20% lower risk of death than those who did not eat nuts.

@oristarA,
I'd say so.

Although, in usual language, we wouldn't refer to the nut as a seed (or a fruit). It's refered to simply as a nut.

@oristarA,
The picture was just to use as a sample of different kinds of nuts. I suppose the article was more specific as to what particular kind of nut was most beneficial.

I'm sure not.

First of all, those are peanuts, which, although called a nut are actually a legume.
They are still healthy, people think of them casually as nuts (in the United States we eat a lot of peanut butter, a spread made of ground up peanuts), but they are not actually a nut.

In your link, in the picture below, it shows almonds, which are a nut.

In your original picture, the nuts are cashew, pecan, hazelnut, and I think a brazil nut and an almond.

@oristarA,
Yes.

"A nut is a fruit composed of a hard shell and a seed ..."

"A nut in cuisine is a much less restrictive category than a nut in botany, as the term is applied to many seeds that are not botanically true nuts. Any large, oily kernels found within a shell and used in food are commonly called nuts."
