Failed to understand the grammar "He had on a golden coronet studded with jewels"

Well, it surely to mean "his head wearing a golden coronet (studded with blah blah. But I failed to get the grammar "he had on."

Context:

He had on a golden coronet studded with jewels and a golden chaplet in the form of two dragons fighting for a pearl.

"he had on" means he was wearing it, ostensibly on his head... Smile

To have on usually means to wear (clothes etc)
He had on a golden coronet
He had on a pair of black shoes
I had on a pair of jeans and a T-shirt.
What did you have on when you met the Queen? I had on my best suit.

Have sth on = wearing sth

Have SB on = kid SB/pull SB's leg [BrE]

You're having me on./You're pulling my leg.

Put SB on = kid SB/pull SB's leg [NaE]

She's just putting him on./She's pulling his leg.
