Picking up discard pile with canasta on table?

Trying to settle a family debate. Let's say I have a canasta in queens and my opponent discards a queen, can I pick up the discard pile by placing the queen in with my existing canasta even if I don't have queens in my hand?

No. As far as I know, you get to pick up the pile only if you have a pair in your hand.
