Does "mathematical approaches to philosophical problems" mean "(using) mathematical approaches to solve philosophical problems"?
Context:
At the risk of frightening those who are cuncomfortable with mathematical approaches to philosophical problems, consider the following analysis. The Reverend Thomas Bayes was a Scottish theologian little remembered for his theological musings but much respected for puttinhg forward a particular probability theorem.
