Hi English teachers,
Please correct my sentence below if it has errors.Thanks in advance.
Why do cutting onions make you cry?

Why does cutting onions make you cry?


Hint: If you are really cutting onions, cut from the stem end. Avoid the end with the roots.

You know, I don't know why we use does instead of do. Maybe we just consider onions to be some sort of collective noun, but I would hate to have to defend that idea.

The subject is not "onions" (which would be plural). The subject is "cutting onions" which takes a singular verb. It is the act of cutting onions that makes you cry.
