Hi English teachers,
Please correct my sentence below if it has errors.Thanks in advance.
Why do cutting onions make you cry?
@Loh Jane,
Why does cutting onions make you cry?
Hint: If you are really cutting onions, cut from the stem end. Avoid the end with the roots.
@roger,
Dearest roger,
thank you but onions has 's',sigh.It is so tricky.
@Loh Jane,
You know, I don't know why we use
does instead of
do. Maybe we just consider
onions to be some sort of collective noun, but I would hate to have to defend that idea.
@roger,
You are really a meek,mild and humble person.
@Loh Jane,
Well, I do know how to cut onions.
@Loh Jane,
The subject is not "onions" (which would be plural). The subject is "cutting onions" which takes a singular verb. It is the
act of cutting onions that makes you cry.
@maxdancona,
Hi max,
Thanks a lot for your explanation.
