Hi English teachers,
is my sentence acceptable? Thanks a lot in advance.
My colleague always mentions some trouble that she has at work and I need to conjecture who she alludes to.

@Loh Jane,
Why not:
My friend often alludes to trouble at work concerning a co-worker.

@Loh Jane,
Punk beat me to the punch. But Jane if you like longer sentences,

Because my colleague Betsy frequently broaches certain difficulties she encounters at work I'm overwhelmed by conjecture over whom she alludes to (to whom she alludes) (exactly who it is to whom she alludes).

True Jane, as colloquial it's just fine. However we can't help wondering to what degree of sophistication you strive

The purist for instance might insist the ending preposition is a practice up with which he will not put

The purer purist might always insist the the condition under which something always happens always must be specified, always

He'll vociferously insist that "conjecture" here as verb is an incorrect usage

Loh Jane, the sentence is fine. More than that, as this is an exercise in vocabulary building, you have used "allude" perfectly.

@Setanta,
Surely Set, Jane, if you reread it you will realize how I merely jest

@Setanta,
People do tend to forget this. Now when the OP specifically asks if a sentence sounds natural to a native speaker, we've got license to do a complete rewrite.

There you go, Set

Oops, now I remember. As with Buco, would you by chance, Set, prefer "Anta"

His name is his age about 20 years ago, I believe. In Catalan.

Acceptable in what sense, Jane? It's grammatical, it's possible but the verb 'conjecture' found within what seems to be a very colloquial /everyday sentence doesn't sound very natural, Jane. It seems that this is a verb that is found more in the academic/news registers.

Quote:
who she alludes to.

--> who she is alluding to.

Even the present simple, rather than the present continuous, used here carries connotations. One could be a great degree of formality/seriousness or it could denote that the situation has become quite common, habitual, routine.

@JTT,
In that connection I often throw in a slightly formal term just to shake up my listeners. For instance where applicable I will use "surely" instead of the usual "sure", whereupon somebody in the crowd will ask, "Who's Shirley"
