People like foofie doesn't understand human history, sociology, or much of "social class."
During the Great Depression, most people were of "lower or poor class." There was no middle class. Most didn't have enough to eat, because there were very few jobs to be had. Out of that human misery, many cultures were able to dig themselves out of that era of the very poor into what sociologist now call the "middle class" which became the majority in what sociologist call "developed countries."
Most who came to this country were poor folks - even Foofie's family.
She just doesn't know much about her own background.
