@OmSigDAVID,
I'm curious how people shooting themselves can be seen as anything other than stupid.

DANVERS — Authorities say a man was rushed to Massachusetts General Hospital yesterday afternoon after he accidentally shot himself in the leg.

Emergency personnel responded to the Shady Oaks trailer park at 103 Newbury St. after receiving a report of the incident about 5:30 p.m.

Acting fire Lt. David Morin said the Engine 2 crew showed up, determined the incident appeared accidental and then tended to the unidentified man’s wound, which was located in the area of his left knee. Radio reports at the time indicated he was bleeding severely.

The man said he had been cleaning his gun at the time of the incident, Morin said.

@OmSigDAVID,
Id agree that he was stupid. Cleaning a loaded gun , cmon Dave.
Lucky he didn't have a ramrod down the barrel when it went off.

Usually these self inflicted knee shots are the results of guys practicing quick draws with automatic pistols.

We had a guy over in Delaware county shoot his own foot TWICE. He was doing quick draw tricks with a very hair triggered weapon . There were lots of "Stupid stories" of him in the local newpapers.

The Sylvania man shot and killed by police early Sunday was a member of an elite group of particularly intelligent individuals.

James DeClercq, 67, was killed after a nearly 10-hour standoff at his apartment at 6632 Maplewood Ave. with police from Sylvania, Sylvania Township, Toledo, and Maumee.

Mr. DeClercq, who was shot five times by police, was a member of Mensa, a group of people who have tested in the top 2 percent of the population on a standardized intelligence test.

Police were called to the apartment complex at 5:13 p.m. Saturday, responding to a call of “a man with a gun acting irrationally,” Sylvania Police Chief William Rhodus said.

A woman who lives in the building called police saying she saw Mr. De- Clercq walking in the hall with a small black gun.

“He said he was carrying it in case anyone gave him any trouble,” the caller said.

About an hour before police were called, a man in a second-floor apartment accidentally fired a gun, apparently agitating Mr. DeClercq, who lived on the first floor, police said.

The man who accidentally fired the gun was going to take his family to a shooting range and teach them how to shoot a gun, Chief Rhodus said.

When police arrived, Mr. De- Clercq barricaded himself in his apartment, where he’s lived for about 10 years, and told police “Leave me alone,” Chief Rhodus said. The complex’s other residents were removed from the building.

Police tried to make contact with Mr. DeClercq before attempting to get a special communication phone through a broken window.

Mr. DeClercq then opened fire on officers, Chief Rhodus said.

From inside an armored vehicle, police took more gunfire from Mr. DeClercq.

In four volleys over about four hours, police launched 38 canisters of tear gas into the apartment.

“It had no effect whatsoever” on Mr. DeClercq, the chief said of the tear gas.

The final round of tear gas went into the apartment around 1 or 2 a.m.

Tear gas fired into the Maplewood Avenue apartment during a 10-hour standoff with James DeClercq that started Saturday remained too heavy Monday for building residents to return. Police had launched 38 canisters of tear gas into the apartment. Police then tried to send a mechanical robot with a camera into the apartment to see where Mr. DeClercq was, but the robot was fired upon.

Police then returned fire.

Mr. DeClercq’s body was inside the apartment until Sunday afternoon, when it was retrieved by a Lucas County Coroner’s investigator. The amount of tear gas inside the apartment was, even Monday, too heavy for residents to return home.

An autopsy performed Monday showed that Mr. DeClercq was shot several times and that two of those shots penetrated the body. The fatal gunshot went through his left arm and another gunshot went through his buttocks, said Dr. Cynthia Beisser, a deputy Lucas County coroner. Chief Rhodus said Mr. DeClercq was shot five times.

During the shootout, four officers — one from Sylvania Township, one from Toledo, and two from Maumee— shot at Mr. DeClercq .

“It was a very justifiable shooting,” the chief said, adding that a suspect’s actions determine the outcome of a situation.

The Toledo officer involved, squad team member Sgt. William Shaner, was placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard practice pending the outcome of such an investigation, said Toledo Chief Mike Navarre. Information on the status of the other officers who fired shots was unavailable Monday.

Police are not sure which officer fired the fatal shot.

Police do not know how many times Mr. DeClercq fired his gun, but police recovered one handgun and two rifles inside the apartment. Chief Rhodus said Mr. DeClercq might have had a concealed-carry permit at one time, but it probably had expired or had been revoked.

DeClercq THE BLADE/AMY E. VOIGT Enlarge | Buy This Photo In 2004, Mr. DeClercq told The Blade he had degrees in law and electrical engineering and described himself as a design relief engineer. He was also helping a friend open a yarn store.

At the time, Mr. DeClercq was at dinner with other members of Mensa; he told The Blade he joined the group to meet women. “I think some of us at least were looking for a member of the opposite sex that’s smart enough to get along with,” he said. Mr. DeClercq told The Blade he was divorced and spending his time fixing electronics.

“I’m proud of what I’ve done and Mensa is just one of the things I’ve done. … I put it on my resume, not so they’ll know that I’m a weird person or anything like that, but just to realize that I’m smart and get things done.”

Sylvania city police had only one prior interaction with Mr. DeClercq. On April 30 police were called to Sautter’s Five-Star Market, 5519 Main St., for a suspicious male waiting outside the store after closing.

Police spoke to Mr. DeClercq and gave him a ride home.

In January, Mr. DeClercq spent time in the Shelby County jail after being charged with one count of carrying a concealed weapon. He was in jail until March 25 when he posted a $2,067 bond and was released.

Some people shouldn't have guns or kids.

Toddlers Killed More Americans Than Terrorists Did This Year

Americans hate terrorists and love our kids, right? So you might be shocked to know that preschoolers with guns have taken more lives so far this year than the single U.S. terrorist attack, which claimed four lives in Boston.

This is admittedly tongue-in-cheek, but one has to wonder if the NSA’s PRISM program would have saved more lives had it been monitoring toddlers – or gun owners – rather than suspected terrorists.

11 Deaths in Five Months Where Shooter Was 3 to 6 Years Old

Listed below are the 11 gun fatalities I found where a preschooler pulled the trigger (from Jan. 1 to June 9, 2013). Starting with a list of five toddler shooting deaths The Jewish Daily Forward published in early May, I unearthed six additional cases. This tragic, unthinkable event has happened every month, like clock-work.

Jan. 10: 6-year-old playmate shoots and kills 4-year-old Trinity Ross, Kansas City, Kan.

Feb. 11: 4-year-old Joshua Johnson shoots and kills himself, Memphis, Tenn.

Feb. 24: 4-year-old Jaiden Pratt dies after shooting himself in the stomach while his father sleeps, Houston.

March 30: 4-year-old Rahquel Carr shot and killed either by 6-year-old brother or another young playmate, Miami.

April 6: Josephine Fanning, 48, shot and killed by 4-year-old boy at a barbecue, Wilson County, Tenn.

April 8: 4-year-old shoots and kills 6-year-old friend Brandon Holt, Toms River, N.J.

April 9: 3-year-old is killed after he finds a pink gun that he thinks is a toy, Greenville, S.C.

April 30: 2-year-old Caroline Sparks killed by her 5-year-old brother with his Cricket “My First Rifle” marketed to kids, Cumberland County, Ky.

May 1: 3-year-old Darrien Nez shoots himself in the face and dies after finding his grandmother’s gun, Yuma, Ariz.

May 7: 3-year-old Jadarrius Speights fatally shoots himself with his uncle’s gun, Tampa, Fla.

June 7: 4-year-old fatally shoots his father, Green Beret Justin Thomas, Prescott Valley, Ariz.

At least 10 more toddlers have shot but not killed themselves or someone else this year (see here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here and here). In the first three cases, the shooter was only 2 years old.

I also found nine instances where children and teens 7 to 19 years old accidentally killed themselves, a family member or friend since January (see here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here and here).

Of course, most if not all of the above deaths and injuries can be attributed to careless adult gun owners.

While this analysis focuses on children, another equally accurate headline could read: “U.S. Gun Culture Kills More Americans Than Terrorists Worldwide.”

In 2010, 13,186 people died in terrorist attacks worldwide, while 31,672 people were killed with firearms in America alone, reports CNN’s Samuel Burke.

We Need a Return to ‘Well-Regulated’ Gun Ownership

We cannot deny that guns pose a real danger to innocent American lives and especially to children. While no one is “coming to take the guns” of responsible people, we still must reach a compromise to address gun violence. I do not have all the answers, but I know as responsible citizens we have to do something.

While some people refuse to accept any limits on gun ownership, we simply do not have the right in America to circumvent personal restrictions that protect society as a whole. We can drink and we can drive, but we cannot mix the two. We have free speech, but we cannot shout “fire” in a crowded theater. We have the Fourth Amendment, but we still submit to searches of our bodies and belongings for the sake of air safety.

People who worship the Second Amendment should recognize the “well-regulated” aspect of gun ownership that the forefathers intended. Instead, we have a gun lobby that pays off senators to vote against background checks and gun culture that welcomes a 3-year-old as a lifetime NRA member. I worry for that child’s playmates.

People who worship the Second Amendment should recognize the “well-regulated” aspect
of gun ownership that the forefathers intended.
That is NOT what thay intended,
as the USSC found in HELLER, supported
by the parsing of the professional grammarians.
Stacie is ignorant.
That meant that a militia is private,
(like a volunteer fire dept.) as distinct from the public militia
of Article I Section 8, Subsections 15 & 16.

to vote against background checks
If each citizen is Constitutionally entitled to EQUAL PROTECTION OF THE LAWS
insofar as his or her right to self defense from predatory violence,
then what is the point of "background checks" other than unConstitutional discrimination ??

Those Senators honestly upheld their oaths of office
to support and defend the US Constitution.
In this case, thay defended it from liberals.
I can pay them with my votes,
and with my donations to their campaigns for re-election.
