And you are addressing this to Spendius...who can use hundreds of words to say less than most people can say in a single sentence.

Were you trying for irony or sarcasm?

My mistake Frank ... I do humbly apologize.

I thought you proudly proclaimed your lack of knowing ...

I guess there is always that. But no need for an apology...and certainly not a humble one.

Let’s see: The post that started all this was:

Quote:
The notion that the god of the Bible “so loved” humanity that he (the god) gave up his only son…is an absurdity.

Essentially this is saying: I will forgive you for doing things that offend me, but I will only do it if you first torture and kill my son.

If a human were to suggest anything like this to debtors…he’d be locked up in a padded cell.

One: Thanks for providing me a reason to repeat it.

Two: What do you see as “not knowing” in that, Ti?

@Ticomaya,
The argument is Tico that your "not knowing" means it is okay to have pre-marital sex, to commit adultery, to get divorced, to have homosexual relations and to practice artificial birth control from the simplest method and up to abortion at the last minute.

@farmerman,
In which case it should be a breeze providing a couple of these "comma-free phrases" and an example of an original thought Mr Clemens gave to the world.

Jeez...a combination of dialogue from cinema's "Men In Black" and early television's "Dragnet."

Brilliant!

Its probably because most English writers get paid by the word, and they seek to enrich themselves by each draft.

Clemens could say, in a single , comma-free phrase, what took several of your literary heros , several chapters to saythe same thing.

"Fine writing" is oft confused with depth, and humor is oft confused with banal. However, in almost all cases, Clemens was the originator of the thought.

Paid by the word? Well, it was true, sort of, in Dickens' time, I give you that.

It was, is, and will always be true, dwollie, for "most" writers. fm did say "most" writers. One of which was Sammy boy.

fm is a bit tricky but I have a lot of experience with the old boy. And Skakespeare was seriously mercenary.

@spendius,
It struck me Lola that a poster sized repro, of this--

http://www.tate.org.uk/art/artworks/warhol-self-portrait-t07146

would be a nice addition to the decor in here.

You could place it on the wall behind the counter and we could contemplate it while we wait for Washup to flick the switches on the dispensers. As a sort of reminder of what we were like not so very long ago and before we took on all these airs and graces and remembering that evolution, in the sense fm refers to it, has had very little to do with any changes wrought.

It could easily be an ancient Brit entering your wattle and daub hut with a view to trying your turnip soup and then getting it on with you.

Sure. Do you think repeating it makes it more or less true?

I suppose the "not knowing" part would have to do with one's attempt to rationalize God, or to presume one knows why God does what He does.

Is God limited to dealing with the forces of physics with which mere mortals must abide? Clearly not.

He is, after all, the omnipotent creator of our universe. That being the case, why should His actions need to follow paths that Frank Apisa feels would be appropriate under the circumstances?

In a coffee-house like this a down-thumb is a sort of black look.

What this place needs are a few vendettas.

@spendius,
Poor dottering sot, it's a good thing that this a bar/bistro in Cyberspace.
Art evolves and changes as does everything else, over time in response to influences beyond itself.
Do you think your hero and mine, Bob Dylan, sprung from the head of Dave Van Ronk or Robert Johnson? Which one? or both as twins??

I'm off to dinner around the corner, there's less smokey thoughts floating over there.
