@Lola,
This is for johnboy to answer, so this is a 'just in the meantime' comment -

Johnboy had a stroke a while ago. He is posting quite well but sparely, still brainy, with plenty of humor.

He is way up there among my favorite humans - not just among a2kers, but humans -

I'm sorry to hear that osso. Taking on the strain 0f invigilating the mob of the Pick-um game on top of his other activities possibly contributed.

As you know I had a go myself from another perspective and I was quite relieved when Tico invited me to knock it off. And I'm retired.

Don't bust a gut so that Mr Obarmy can take the credit for making the country grow.

Coffee. I misjudged the IRS this year. I managed to eke out a refund. By legitimate means. So I deserve a black coffee and one of them oatmeal-raisin cookies.

Certainly, unless there is some pressing reason for not doing.

Thanks. It was my first coffee since breakfast. You know, I spent my younger days escaping from Texas. I kept getting drawn back by varying circumstances. Now I am resigned to being here forever. There are non tea party types about. Not enough, granted. But life elsewhere has its drawbacks too.

Yes indeedy. That's all true. Still...........if I won the lottery, I'd move back uptown. Without it, I think I'll make my peace here too.

@Lola,
I'm hedging by also playing the lottery. Smile

Perhaps the answer here is that, ultimately, contentment and happiness are choices we make ... Or don't make.

@edgarblythe,
If I ever won the lottery, Id probably buy more land around our place up in Maine, but Id make my permanent stay place here in Lancaster County.
Ive pretty had as much of the "world travel" that I need for one life. I do like being on the sea but thats really not a place, its a mindset with a map attached

@georgeob1,
Yes georgeob. That's what I say. However, I must qualify. Top down happy brain function is about choice, like exercise and healthy eating, especially intensive exercise because it is a natural anti-depressant. However, if a person is predisposed to depression through genetic inheritance or through habits learned through family or friends, bottom up remedies may be helpful. Again, that's a choice as well, but less so. If a person is so demoralized, or characterlogically inhibited or committed to self destructive behaviors, they may not be able to help themselves without bottom-up techniques (medication or psychotherapy or both). Unfortunately, learning from environment can be prohibitive. Will a person take the pills, go to therapy? Some will, others won't. Then what? If not, sadness and destructiveness becomes a way of life.

@farmerman,
Yes, fm. It's an interesting question. What would I do if I won the lottery? Of course, it's hard to know for sure. That much money might rearrange priorities in ways it's hard to know unless one gets the chance. I think I would continue in my profession, only more so. Would I work in my profession* on a daily basis? I think I might since it's hard for me to enjoy my profession right now without current work experience, regardless of how much money I may or may not have. On the other hand......I might find other ways to be involved. There are many.

In any case, my chances of winning the lottery are almost the same if I play or if I don't. For this reason, I don't spend money on the enterprise. But I do enter any contest that does not require too much of my time or any money. It's just fun to think about what I would do if I did win. And of course, someone does win. If I've entered, I do have a chance, even if it's excessively tiny.

@Lola,
Hi Lola, do you have wheelchair access? If so, then I'd love to have something from your wonderful coffee house. My eyes crave the delicious goodies in the photo posted by Hamburgboy, but common sense dictates that I ask for the healthy option! Carrot cake perhaps?

Well-- provided George allows that low expectations is a choice having equal validity with ambition, aspiration and self-improvement his statement is reasonable.

One might sit here talking all night about happiness except that doing so suggests we are not all that happy.

We generally see a lot of the success stories on Media and the much larger number of disappointments are buried away. And low expectations is anti-American. But it is a choice. It has always come naturally to me. The Thersites Syndrome. Trapped and shaking his head sadly at the triers who got us into all this ****. After all ambition, aspiration and self-improvement has some very high hurdles to surmount. The way they are going there won't be a world fit for them to inherit. Meekness might be a survival mechanism.

It's the theme of The Red Badge of Courage I think.

I'm not so sure about that either. Intensive exercise is like a pill in that it needs to be taken regularly. I always saw it as a therapy and the people who engage in it, and I've met a lot, mad, in direct proportion to the intensity.

Back to the big game and the sofa.

Wassau's carrot cake is pretty delicious, vonny. And of course we have wheelchair access. Here you are. Serene, will you bring vonny an extra large slice of carrot cake?

Only if you count non-depressed mood as madness. I have always said, spendi that you talk backwards. And here is yet again another indication of it. But yes, some people I know who over do exercise, like anyone who over does anything can behave wildly and madly. But this fact doesn't necessarily indicate the wisdom in not exercising at all. Don't mistake good use of exercise with abuse of it.

It is, yes, like anything else. But again, meekness can also be over done. I personally have an aversion to it. But I'm trying to tame that particular personality quirk of mine.
