@ossobuco,
Really, those stories, all three are sad in a big way. The Senate is voting on the cloture vote for Hagel. It looks like Hagel will be confirmed, but still waiting to see.

@Berty McJock,
Berty, Beautiful, like I said. But I just moved back to Texas (not beautiful or mountainous and dry) from Portland Oregon where it rained and was cold toooooooooooooooooooo much. It didn't bother me at first. I loved the people and was having a fun time there until, after three years I just hated it when the two month Summer was over on September 1 and we were back to the cold dreary rain. Nice for visiting though..........unless it's raining when you visit.

I do love crowded cities though. The more dense, the better, as far as I'm concerned.

@Lola,
Thanks, Lola. I did not know Brautigan was a favorite of Dys'...I'm glad I know it now.

There are some physical similarities...or "dress" similarities in Dys and Brautigan, that I notice. Mainly just the hat thingy...but something else not so easily defined.

@ossobuco,
Bratigan? Wait, I'll look. Yes he did, along with other stuff. He killed himself during a period when he thought he'd been forgotten and was unloved. Funny, you can see the seeds for that in the poem Frank posted here. Sad again.

Happy Valentine's Day everyone.

@Lola,
You too, Lola.
I think Valentine's day is a toughie for some just as the winter holidays are.
I liked it back in fourth grade when Mark Gaynor gave me a big card with a red satin heart. I was completely amazed.

@ossobuco,
No, no go. Hagel blocked in order to hammer in about Benghazi. Maybe after the recess..........stupid

@ossobuco,
Valentine's Day is a ok day for me. But these days can be bad if you have to put up uninvited guests at your house, like your in-laws. Really, get a clue. Now that they're gone, bless their souls, it's all better. Just a pleasant day, not too much expectation, or too expensive.

And I know it can be tough for some.

@ossobuco,
Hope, yes hope. I still have some of that, although, I think it may be the pills working. Whatever it is, I am feeling better. Garbage quotient is down to 49% Progress. How about you?

@Berty McJock,
I spent several months near the Firth of Forth and in Edinburgh and I agree, it gets really depressing when its ''nae light oot'.
Whenever there were sunny and cloud scudding days, it was glorious though. Cold winds an lotsa rocks. I was in cod heaven.
Scotch whiskey was good too.

@Lola,
There's still hope for my getting my act together. We'll see.

Meantime, when I lived in an old victorian seaport town in northern California, the temp highs in the summer were mostly at 63 degrees f, rising to perhaps 66, and in winter, rising to 53 with occasional not too bad freezing temps at night. Heavy on the moisture though and winds by the bay (bay on two sides) could get mighty brisk. I actually got to like it, took me a while, and now I rather miss it. I prefer being able to hop around though, from hither to yon, and that isn't practical.

I need a job as a hired city street commentator... many cities, if you please.

You bet. However codfishing is not one of my favorite past times. Its more like snagging cinder blocks at 300 feet.
Cod are such a docile , pacifish beings. The only reason to fish for em is to get a meal of excellent flavored cold water fish.

@farmerman,
i gotta admit i've never fished for cod. i suppose i'm a traditionalist. worm on a hook, fishing the pools in mountain rivers for brown trout (and if you can snag a salmon without getting caught, all the better Wink

@Berty McJock,
never fished in SCotland though. I never hd an apartment where I could cook, and I was always with other folks who wanted to go drinking.
I did wander the hills and glacial valleys, I spent a lot of time trying to do watercolors of the scenery , but never had as much time as I needed.

Scotland and Ireland were my favorites. (I gotta tell you that I had a lot of trouble understanding my SCottish clients--I suppose my accent was equally indecipherable to them)

I have an annoying habit of picking up accents and talking like the natives very quickly , but in SCotland (especially around Edinburgh) I was flummoxed, they put emphases on totally different syllables than Im used to hearing. It took me almost a week of practiv=ce so I could imitate a Scot.
