When does an interest become an obsession?

Discuss:

Is the dividing line one of time involved or cash expended or what?

Is it the number of objects involved? If I collect salt/pepper shaker sets, is there a set number when I have stopped having a hobby and gotten myself an obsession? (Like when I take down all the art work from the walls in order to put up twenty five three inch wide shelves)

If I own one gun (oh, now we know what he is on about.) but I feel compelled in some way to buy several more on a monthly basis, is this compulsion a sign that I am either already obsessed or perhaps becoming so?

Is there such a thing as a healthy obsession?

@Joe Nation,
let's see: How about you know when you've crossed the line when you're so obsessed with collecting that you filed for bankruptcy and defaulted on your mortage but still colelct and store the objects.

As for healthy obsessions; I knew a man (my ex's dad) who's obsessed with helping people. His own life is not suffering at all and, in his retirement, he uses his time wisely but generally is focused into humanitarian efforts for community or his family.

@Joe Nation,
I guess I have two obsessons; travel and photography. Have traveled to over 190 countries with about 85 unique destinations. I've already been to Cuba and Hawaii this month, and have three more trips planned for this year. The next trip to Portugal and Spain on a AMA cruise on the Duomo River, and a trans-Atlantic cruise from Barcelona to Miami in November. Another trip to Cuba in the planning stages.

@tsarstepan,
"42"

"HIKE !"

Joe Namath and Joe Montana . Yeah, I was obsessed with both at different times, for different reasons.

@Joe Nation,
I thought I looked sort of like the female star (huh, what?) so I morphed into being her in the movie..

Time involved; yes.
I was obsessed with guns
long before I got my first one at age 8.

@Joe Nation,
Jon,
Maybe we shud call off our bet,
because I'm moving to Florida on Friday.
There's not much chance that Zimmy's innocence
will be established by then at trial (let alone appeals).

@OmSigDAVID,
So...you are gonna leave us up here in the cold...while you luxuriate in the sun of New York South.

They ain't got the Second Street Deli down there!

Good luck!

@OmSigDAVID,
You're moving to Florida? I hear it's dangerous down there. (Heh)

New York City will be poorer without you.
