I ride my bike every chance I get. It's an interest. If I let Stephen's prescription run out because I bought a new cycling jacket, that's an obsession.
@blueveinedthrobber,
There is an addictive quality about obsession. The inability to stop oneself from continuing an activity despite deliterious effects.

A friend of mine in Ca came from a wealthy family. He bought a three-bedroom house on ten acres in the mountains in a small town called Miramonte.
He was always obsessed with cars. I drove up to visit before moving out of the state and driving down the road to his house I could see all the cars, 36 cars parked all around the front of his property, it looked like he was having a huge party but he wasn’t, he was the only one there, all those cars were his.

Yea, but that applies to
ANYTHING good that we buy, e.g., a new car.
Its not distinct in principle.

@Joe Nation,
Obsession by definition is negative. If it had no negative consequences, it wouldnt rise to the level of being an obsession. An obsession occupies so much of your thoughts, time and effort that it interferes with your normal functioning.
i've been interested in this question for years, and i will find an answer, even if it takes the rest of my life!

@OmSigDAVID,
David, I'm glad to see you've arrived.
I hope you will find a sympathetic Mensa group in your new location, and that there will be fine restaurants for you to discover.
The streets of New York seem emptier this morning.
