Two weeks ago I slipped on the ice, torqued, and put a major crack in my left femur. My doctor has given me prescriptions for both "acetaminophen/cod3" and another script for "acetaminophen/cod4".
I've noticed that my appetite is drastically reduced--and since I'm overweight and limited in the exercise I can do on crutches this is welcome.
I have vague literary memories of scrawny old men sucking on pipes in opium dens and emaciated heroin addicts dying with needles in their arms. Do opiates supress appetite?
Websites and the fine print comments from the drugstore are both silent on the subject.
I've noticed a reduced appetite whenever I've been on Tylenol 3's...never really thought about it though. Sounds right.
PS. I hope everything heals up well.
Opiates usually cause constipation.
Jer--
Thanks for both your observations and your good wishes. Glad you're on A2K.

Thus far I've been spared intestinal indignity. I have been chowing down on fruit and fiber.
Opiates slow the entire system down.
They're sedating chemicals.
GI effects of codeine:
anorexia, nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps.
One more thought...Whenever I've been on codeine I've sat in front of the TV all day - hardly moved at all...that may be the reason for reduced appetite.
Sure makes daytime talkshows interesting though
Noddy,
Thanks for the welcome
Tylenol 4 is twice as strong as Tylenol 3. I used one pill for a hectic morning and still have 59 left from a two week old prescription.
I'm leery of opiates--but pain makes me very short tempered and tearful and my present job description requires endless patience and a perpetual kindly spirit.
Noddy24- Don't be a hero....if you need the medication to control the pain, use it. People who use opiates for pain do NOT become drug addicts, if they are juducious in its use.
Phoenix--
I'm stoic only when other choices don't exist.
I've had prescriptions for T-3 & T-4 for several years now on a just-in-case basis, but until this fracture I haven't ever had one of them refilled.
My Internist commented that I have almost nothing in common with Rush Limbaugh--except pain.
Opiates make me very sleepy and when awake, very depressed.
Ay-yi-yi, that sounds like some world-class pain.
Hold that dominion of yours.
Sozobe--
Thanks. Surely I can hang on until springtime.

The backwoods is a little short of alternative medical practioners, but I'm clever about self hypnosis and escaping into a good book.
Thanks for the thought.

Do you like mysteries?
I think it's Robert Parker who writes detective fiction about the Boston area. Very easy, but very entertaining read!
