I agree - both sentences are poorly worded.
During the journey its sufferings should not make us regret choosing it, but, at its end, make us glad we did.
The first sentence talks about not regretting not having made the journey (cumbersome); the second talks about satisfaction at not having abandoned it. To not make a journey is not the same as to abandon it.
