Does "subscribed to by" mean "adopted (as a belief) by"?

Context:
Psychiatric disorders have been caught up in the "mind" segment of the "mind-body" dualsm still subscribed to by most citizens, many physicians, and een many in the mental health field itself.

Yes. Maybe not so much "adopted by" as "accepted by" but close enough.

Does "subscribed to by" sound natural? It sounds awkward in my ears.

It's a bit stilted and you probably wouldn't hear it spoken a lot but it's not incorrect.
