My friends hate my girlfriend

I go to a private school and my wonderful and beautiful girlfriend of 2.5 years goes to a public school. Every attempt i make to get my friends to like her fails. They view her as lower class and have a condescending attitude towards her. The girls flat out call her white trash to her face and behind her back and the guys insist on playing White Trash party by Eminem every time they see us together. I have no intention of leaving her. I just want this to stop. They make fun of me at school as well guys and girls with their white trash and wal mart jokes. On numerous occasions they've made her cry. it baffles me that my friends would treat her like that. Normally, my friends are pretty laid back and accepting of people. I just don't understand why they don't like her, she's never started stuff with them.

For real, they are like that by default, they do it nuff times man, every place, not jus you.

I've been around these people since Freshmen year and they've never been like this, i guess true colors come out when rich kids aren't always around other rich kids

i told them last night when i made a final effort at the movies ( Djenga unchained great movie) to lay off. They started with the white trash jokes and wal mart jokes ( she's never been actually) i asked them to stop and their response was " JRice, we're kidding, chill out. I agree with you're advice to dump them though. I can't be around people who make her feel like s***. She's from Alabama but moved to Chicago and they assume she's racist and they mock her for that as well. It's gonna be awkward and hard to those people tomorrow.

it's a group thing for them they wouldn't have the guts to say anything face 2 face with me or her solo because their cowards but in a group of 8 against 2 they have plenty of backup which makes them more bold

Have you tried talking to any of them one-on-one? without the courage of the group they might have to admit that they're behaving badly - and be less likely to go along with the group behaviour.

I know it would be hard for you to do this but it might be the only way to keep any of them as friends.

Have they been doing to this to her and you for the past 2.5 years? It probably would be best not to spend time with these people in any kind of group setting.

i have and i get empty responses from each of the 8 ( 4 guys 4 gf). They have been doing this for 2.5 yrs and in those 2.5 years we've hung out 4 times. 2 right out of the gate with the relationship. a third back on july 4th and then just recently. My gf is wonderful because she has tried to give them the benefit of the doubt but that can't work anymore.

You've reminded me of when I moved to Chicago from where I'd been living in Oklahoma. I was about 20 years old so this was around 30 years ago. I doesn't sound like much has changed.

I was absolutely gobsmacked by how prejudiced some people were against people from the south. They seemed to think I must be some kind of moonshine drinking, shotgun toting, slave owning hillbilly who lived in a teepee.

Good on you for defending your girl but I think they probably like getting a rise out of you. My advice is to stop listening. Roll your eyes, get up and leave.

Classism is a similar poison to racism.

**** those assholes. Show some strength and tell them all to go to hell. You may be locked out by them in the short term.... but high school, although it doesn't seem that way, is a VERY short chapter in your life. Even if you break up with this girl eventually, even if she DID turn out to be white trash, it wouldn't change the fact that your "friends" are assholes. when you look back on your high school career from the perspective of maturity, your conscience will be clear and you'll know you did the right thing and NOTHING can take that away from you.
