You've reminded me of when I moved to Chicago from where I'd been living in Oklahoma. I was about 20 years old so this was around 30 years ago. I doesn't sound like much has changed.
I was absolutely gobsmacked by how prejudiced some people were against people from the south. They seemed to think I must be some kind of moonshine drinking, shotgun toting, slave owning hillbilly who lived in a teepee.
Good on you for defending your girl but I think they probably like getting a rise out of you. My advice is to stop listening. Roll your eyes, get up and leave.
Classism is a similar poison to racism.
