Americans haven't suffered a major economic dislocation in the recent past. The unemployment rate has stayed below ten percent for my whole lifetime ( I am 43).

larry, You are fortunate. The US had double digit unemployment rates before WWII. However, unemployment rates can be misleading, because of all the variables involved in how our government calculates unemployment rates. Many leave the work force permanently before retirement age, because of their inability to find work. They are not counted in most figures. c.i.

I'll stick to my original point--that mass protests in my lifetime have been about foreign policy issues like the Vietnam War, the nuclear freeze, and now the war against Iraq.
