Well it's good to know that the few yanks who responded here weren't offended by the ad. I thought it was pretty funny myself, very tongue in cheek, and it really pokes more fun at Canadians than anyone else.
georgeob1: There may currently be more teams, etc. in the USA, but you are looking at it purely by the numbers.
According to the CIA website (I used a source you would accept.
), Canada's population (as of July 2003) is 32,207,113 whereas the population of the USA (also July 2003) is 290,342,554. Soooo, doing a little division, the population of the USA is just over 9 times that of Canada.
Okay, next I went to the NHL site to see how many pro teams there are (I have no way to determine ALL hockey teams, so let's stick with the pros) and found 30 in total. Of those 30, 6 are Canadian. Or, in other words, 1/5 of the NHL consists of Canadian teams. What it all boils down to is this: per capita, Canada has almost twice the teams as in the USA. AND...(although I'm only going by heresay on this) there are probably more Canadian born players in the whole NHL than there are American born players.
By deduction, Canada is the first nation of hockey.
And I disagree with your "a boot" commentary. Let me explain why. I lived in the USA for a few years and your "ear" gets attuned to the local way of speaking. When I returned to Canada, I must confess, I did hear a difference in how "out" words were pronounced, but it was subtle. It wasn't as bad as "a boot" by any means.
Also, I can attest to what standup said about "eh". I never hear it. The only people I am aware of who use it consistently are Newfies and sometimes from farmers.
