Child gave me an idea...

Two of mine (just off the top of my head):

1997 Super Bowl, Packers win the coin toss, opt to receive, loooong kickoff, Desmond Howard catches it on the one yard line, does his fancy Hesiman Trophy legwork, gets further, gets further, everyone's standing and screaming, he breaks out of the clump, and he is zooming straight for the end zone!!! TD, right off the bat. (I watched that game in an old house in Madison with three apartments, three Super Bowl parties, and the house was literally rocking.)

2000, early November, me hugely pregnant, E.G. telling me not to watch the game 'cause I'll get too hyper and start contractions early (Rolling Eyes), Packers vs. Vikings (grrrrrrrrrrrrrowl). Close close close game, score 20-20 in the 4th quarter.

Vikings get the ball to the Packers' 15 yard line with 8 seconds left in regulation, try for a game-winning field goal. (At the 15 yard line -- total gimme.) I'm pacing, nibbling fingernails, sending voodoo. The snap is muffed! Confusion! A pass! Intercepted... we're goin' to overtime.

I'm, like, doing my breathing, really trying to keep calm.

Packers win the toss, elect to receive. (Sudden-death.) Brett is ON, great passes, marching 'em down. Then on third down (3rd and 4) (yes, I finally looked it up for details, but I remembered most of 'em! Enough to find it!) on the 43 yard line, Brett heaves a pass to Free, my main man (after Brett of course) at the time. It's a decent but not great pass, the Vikes defender gets a piece of it, people are on the ground, the defender is celebrating, damn. 4th and 4.

But wait!!!

Freeman was on the ground when the Vikes defender tried to get the ball and missed. The ball bounced off of Freeman's back, he wheeled around, he caught it, (barely getting his hands under), everyone thinks the play is dead, nobody's touching him, he gets up and scoots into the end zone!!!!!

TOUCHDOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm leaping around like a pregnant maniac at this point, but still need to find out what the instant replay says. Yup, it's a TD! The Packers win!!!!!!!

Then some Lambeau Leaping (there, not here), and some hyperventilating (here, not there -- though actually probably there too), and some more Lamaze (here), and sozlet held on a few more weeks.

What's yours?

Oh and also in that game (Vikes-Packers), Darren Sharper made two interceptions. Late, my aunt fanny.

(Article about that game:)

Sharper was late, so said Steve Young, and I will believe the BEST QB ever....Even better than Farve.

Hmmmmmmmmmm...

Better than Joe Montana, maybe. Better than Favre? The ending hasn't been written to that story, yet.

You should have been a "yes man" because you can suck up like a vacuum, or something else that sucks up a lot.

Sorry, but athletically, mentally, statistically, and whatever else you want to use, Young was the best. Followed by John Elway, and Joe Montana.

My point is just that Young and Montana are known quantities, specific stats, not going to add anything, Brett's still going.

BUT -- I want sports stories! Thanks for yours to start it off on the other thread, Child, any others?

Not limited to football -- I have favorite MJ stories, but they're known by all. (6th championship game, clock winding out, MJ has the ball, dribbles, fakes, fades, and...)

Kirby Pucket grabbing a homer away from (?) in 1987 is another (I have to look that one up for details.)

The Bulls won the championship on my birthday a few times (at least twice).

Ahh, I miss sports. I haven't been following any sports since all my teams became punching bags.

Patriots vs Oakland Raiders, playoffs, 2002. Snowbowl...I was at the game. Unreal.

I was at the Patriots/Colts playoff game this year.

I was at the Red Sox playoff games against the Yankees at Fenway last season. Of course the end result sucked, but it was awesome baseball. I was in the bleachers when the bullpen fight happened, and when Pedro tossed Don Zimmer to the ground. I think I was wearing my "Shank a Yank" t-shirt.

The Celtics making the biggest playoff comeback in NBA history against the Nets in 2002. I was at that game...I remember halftime(they were down 74-53), I almost fell asleep and at that point could have cared less if we stayed or left. The whole experience turned out incredible.

The choices are many...

Boston blowing the penant last year.

Boston blowing the '86 series

Boston blowing the '75 series.

Boston blowing the A-Rod trade.

Boston trading the Bambino.

If I didn't know any better, I'd say Boston sucks.

Skwerl?

I don't know no stinking Skwerl.

I'm just a simple country boy from south Georgia, who eats prodigious amounts of smoked pork ribs and launches cats into sub-orbital flights and am probably related to myself as a result of all the inbreeding in my family.

What was the question?

Of course the greatest sports moment ever would have to be the immaculate reception. Franco Harris! The beginning of the greatest football dynasty ever!

Also, I remember when the U.S. hockey team beat the Russians in 1980. I was just a kid, but I still get all warm and fuzzy about that one.

My favorite sports moments are Joe Namath on the sidelines in a full-length fox (this was the pre-fur-is-bad era) and Marvin Gaye singing the national anthem at the NBA Allstars Game. Or was it one of the playoffs?

One more I just remembered. Seeing Mike Tyson fight in the early days. I specifically remember him beating the living crap out of Larry Holmes for a minute or two. He was a complete animal back then.
