Unanswered ??????

Officially answered, like that red ribbon has been bestowed.

If someone asks a question, they can choose a best answer. If they do that, the question is considered answered. If they don't, it's unanswered (regardless of how many responses it has received).

I believe that doesn't apply to discussions, just questions.

How does one signal a good answer

there should be some verbage in the initial post -- something like "select best reply"...

Because it is selected by the OP. How else would you decide what has been answered? Suppose there is a question with 5 people replying that they don't know either, and 58 others going off topic on their own little agenda. Should that make the question show up as "answered"?

The only other alternative would be for the moderators to sit down, examing all answers to every question, and render judgement as to whether it has been answered. Even if every dime of our membership fees went to the mods, they still wouldn't be getting rich.
