@DrewDad,
That's true about government debt, but we do know what part of their budget is needed to pay on that debt as a percentage of their spending.

@cicerone imposter,
But a budget surplus does not automatically reduce government debt.

How can there be a budget surplus and a national debt at the same time?
Shouldn't the surplus be used to pay down the debt?

Because they're not the same thing.

The debt is made up of US Treasury Bonds.

The repayment rate is fixed.

So no, you cannot automatically pay down the debt.

Well the thing is, there was no budget surplus, it's a lie. There hasn't been a surplus for over 65 years.

@mysteryman,
No. Budget surplus is an annual statement. You could begin the year with a ten dollar debt, have a budget surples of one dollar, and you would still have debt.

Think of budget surplus as a line on the income statement, and debt as a line of a balance sheet.

@roger,
That line came from Bush.

@roger,
I understand that, my question is why can't you use that dollar to pay down your debt?

Technically they would be able to but there hasn't been a surplus to actually do it.

No, no, no, it was GW Bush who said "I'm a uniter, not a divider."

@cicerone imposter,
This news report is so funny!

Quote:
Ryan Has Ear of Washington’s Conservative Establishment

Since his emergence as the key Congressional Republican on the budget issue, Representative Paul D. Ryan has had a powerful influence on intellectuals, writers and policy makers.

Is this the budget that Romney said mirrored his or the one that he said it'll be his budget.

According to the Washington Post, the Romney-Ryan budget is a fantasy.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/ezra-klein/wp/2012/08/14/romneys-budget-plan-is-a-fantasy/

If this is the extent of the conservative intellectuals, they've got a bigger problem than what they're telling Americans; their budget doesn't add up!

He has some good points, as does Obama.

And he has some bad points, as does Obama.

If you're one of the 99 percent who work for a living, why would you want a president that's way out of your class, have nothing with?

@Rickoshay75,
Using your logic, I shouldn't vote for Obama either, because he is also a wealthy man.
So who should I vote for?

@Rickoshay75,
mm starts his statement with "to be honest....," and knowing that Romney is a liar, what's his plan? Does "honesty" really make any difference?

Well, stuff like this makes me think you're not being intellectually honest, MM.

Are we really to believe that Obama, who at age 51 was able to pay off his student loans just 8 years ago, and whose parents and parents-in-law were struggling working class people; and Romney, who lived off of his father's investment dividends to get himself through college, and whose personal wealth is conservatively estimated at a quarter of a billion dollars, should be thought of as equally relatable to average people?

Do you honestly look at the two men's respective "wealth" as comparable in any sensible way?

@snood,
Also misses the point. It is not that Romney is incredibly rich, its that his policies mostly favor the rich.
