What does "put my thing down" mean?

Reply Mon 11 Jun, 2012 01:47 am
"I'll slide in and put my thing down" sounds like being said by a thief, who wanted to sneak into his hideout and the stolen things down in there.

Context:

I'll slide in and put my thing down. But when come out I want answers.
Go put your thing down.

(From the dialogues of a film)

@oristarA,

This is American slang. More context would be useful.

@oristarA,
Hello, OristarA. Maybe “put my thing down” implies that something has been no meaningful for someone and it does not matter what happens in the next.

@oristarA,

Fair enough, but I meant more of the script, to gauge what the speaker meant.

"Down" is one of these words which crops up in many different phrases, with many different meanings.

To say nothing about "My thing".....

Men in Black movies feature confrontations with aliens using very odd weapons.
This sounds like a line from scene where one character is trying to cool down a situation.

So, confusion so far. American slang is peppered with "You know what I'm sayin'? because I suppose, nobody knows what they're saying.

When the video starts, move the indicator to:
00:18:45 - 00:18:48
The line is there. And the full context is there.

@oristarA,
A few years ago, the point was made that
the colloquial exhortation to: "forget about it"
had around 25 different meanings,
some of which were directly opposite to one another.

@oristarA,
Okay. I got it. It's slang for my way of doing, my way of operating.

When police officers are on a beat (an area they patrol all the time) they get to know the people in the area. They also get to know just how to question certain people in certain ways to get answers, it becomes their way of operating, it becomes their "thing".

So, when the younger guy says to the older guy, "I'm going to put my thing down." it means he going to go and question the suspect his way, using his method, his 'thing'.
The older guy says basically, "Yeah, you go do that.", and see how you do.

~~
I've never heard the expression used outside of this movie, but, as an aside, the named of the organized crime group, La Cosa Nostra, translates as "Our Thing, or Our Way."

@oristarA,
"I'll slide in and put my thing down"

Translation:
"I'll make a smooth entry and handle the matter with my acquired expertise in such matters"

@Joe Nation,
No, they are witless examples of two "actors" who ought to be mightily ashamed of themselves, Joe.

One, okay, they made a stupid mistake. What number is this?

@JTT,
Oristar is asking about Men in Black, the first one.

We, the greatest civilization ever to have been situated on the Earth, have now achieved the making of Men in Black III.

What do you do for laughs, JTT?
