it's
its
etc

When should it be used and when shouldn't it be used? I think I've got the replacement of letters part worked out. But as I understand it, there are other rules that apply.

it's = it is
its = possessive form

possessive forms (example) Sally's
plural (example) Sallys

Does that help?

Caprice is right re its/it's by my book. Not that anyone seems to understand it any more. Drives me nuts.

Or nut's as so many spell the plural form these days!

Grumble, moan...

So "its" is possessive?
And "Sally's" is also possessive???? (Also happens to be the name of the lady I'm going to meet next weekend)

My peeve is the use of "your" in place of "you're". I think I've mentioned that one before, not that anyone pays attention to these things. Wink

You have it Wilso. The English language doesn't make sense half the time.

Another peeve is "there" instead of "their".

How do people pass English classese these days??

Another one that drive me nuts is when to use "was" or "were". After I type it out, I see immediately that I have written it incorrectly, and I edit. I would like a dollar for every time I changed "was" to "were" on A2K posts. Must be my Brooklyn upbringing! Laughing

In the UK it's known as the Grocer's Apostrophe

Apple's 25p/lb

Pear's 40p/kilo

What's funny is they ALL do it!

Safeway in the UK also produced a warning/disclamer over the use of shopping trolleys and small children. These were big posters and stuck onto walls and windows. Here's the important part of the warning/disclaimer....
........Parents are reminded that it is there responsibility to ensure the safety of there children.......

Gee, you would think a big corporate giant like Safeway could afford staff who knew some of the finer points of spelling and grammar!

Hmmm...perhaps that could be my new career! Razz
