I believe the one value of acronyms is to help make those, that function, in specific disciplines feel that they are more knowledgeable than those, lay people, that only have a smattering of knowledge of the discipline. That could include the military, the psychological profession, other social services, and law enforcement, just to name a few.
For example it is quick and easy to say that talking to an ABC may be easier than one who has come here later in life> (ABC = American Born Chinese.)
And, one can feel a bit above those that do not know the difference between ADD and ADHD. (Attention Deficit Disorder; Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.)
By the way, didn't you once ask me what my MOS was in the military? (Military Occupation Skill.) I thought you did, if my memory serves me correctly. And, for some period, you were a GI (General Issue).
