The main reason they went was to ask the resident fortune teller to read their tea leaves, hoping she'd see in them the initials of future boyfriends.

Does "intial" here mean the first letter of a word?

Your initials are the first letters from each of your names. John Fitzgerald Kennedy is know as JFK. Or as a further example, Brad Pitt would use BP, Angelina Jolie would be AJ.

Nancy - do you understand that the tea leaves - really little bits of the leaves called findings - are left on the bottom of the cup? The design left by the leaves is 'read' by the reader. This 'reading" is supposed to give a clue about the future.

It was hoped that the initials (the ID) of the boyfriends would be formed by the little bits of leaves.
