Please submit your homework on/by Friday at the latest.

Should I use 'on' or 'by'?

By. On would mean on Friday - not sooner, not later. By suggests that it could be turned in earlier.

Edit: Actually, use whichever, depending on the meaning you intend to convey. If you say by, don't be surprised if someone turns it in on Thursday.

Oh, you couldn't delete it if you wanted to. It collapses when your either report it, or vote it down. Everyone can see it except you, and if you click the collapsed post, it will be there for you, too.

'at the latest' pretty much makes 'by' the only choice for an uninterrupted statement, Ms Tan.

I can see someone saying "on", then adding 'at the latest' as an afterthought.

Please submit your homework on Friday, ... at the latest.

I am a bit confused. So is is correct to say "Please submit the homework on Friday at the latest' or just say "Please submit the homework by Friday."?

Sorry for being confused..

What I was relaying was that this sounds like speech and we often don't plan every remark ahead of time. When these things happen and they do, often, there are simple adjustments made.

So again, 'correct' is a bad choice of words to describe this. Imagine the speaker thinking that the homework be in by Friday, and that that person is going to be there only Friday, so the "prof" says,

"Please submit the homework on Friday,... [thinks to him/herself, Oh I'm not gonna be here but my secretary can accept the homework assignment] at the latest".
