The musical is based on the story that Charles Dickens was writing at the time of his death. Dickens serialized all of his stories. He never finished his Drood story. The title character was murdered but the world has never found out who the murderer in the story would be. Drood has several characters. The Broadway musical allowed each audience to vote on who they thought the murderer was. Based on the audience vote, different endings were shown. The musical appeared on Broadway in 1985 and was the first to have multiple endings.
