For a great many years movies lip-synced all musical performances. (Not sure when this practice ended--possibly in the 60s.) The reason according to one expert was to allow the musicians to move about, overcoming the restrictions then imposed by mics. This same reasoning however would seem to require lip-syncing of non-musical actors--and this of course didn't happen. So what's the real scoop?
