So What's Up Mayans?

apparently the Olmec culture which predated the Mayans significantly was responsible for the long count calendar and inventing the number zero, at least in meso american culture. According to this article there were even cultures flourishing in this part of the world 1000 years previous. Apropos of nothing, but interesting, with all this Mayan hoopla currently going on.

@blueveinedthrobber,
History is written by the victors. That means survivors.

@blueveinedthrobber,
The "Mayan hoopla" continues because they outlived the Olmec.

Oh, nevermind.

The Mayan Hoopla has nothing to do with the Maya. 2012 is just the ending of a period, and the start of the next one. It's kind of like the end of a century or a millenium and the start of the next one with us, except on a somewhat larger scale. There are no actual Maya expectations of doomsday.

Still has to do with the Mayans since the entire premise is built on historical fact, meaning the Mayan calendar. The conclusions of course are a different story.
