What does "it" refer to here? "the guidance"?

And, does "concession" here mean "the act of conceding or yielding"?

Context:

The energy with which that great conflict was opened and, under the guidance of a manifest and beneficent Providence the uncomplaining endurance with which it was prosecuted to its consummation were only surpassed by the wisdom and patriotic spirit of concession which characterized all the counsels of the early fathers.

no, it refers back to "the great conflict" and the actions taken to prosecute it, whatever they were (unstated in the quote).
Concession I think refers mor to magnanimity and willingness to accomodate other viewpoints.
This is written in a really old style of rhetoric, sounds like it's way more than a century old.

Oh, okay, 1853. Yep, old. Now I guess at some point I'll have to go back and read it to try to figure out what he was trying to say.

Thank you Jack.

Of course it is old. The inaugural addresses of American Presidens are important historical documents that are must reads.

"must reads", Ori, in the same manner that Goebbels' screeds are must reads.
