"Jim Carrey was living homeless out of his car in Hollywood, California, when one day, broke but still dreaming, he had the inspiration to write himself a check for twenty million dollars."

In this sentence, what does "living homeless out of his car" mean?
Does it mean he could only live in his car or he had no house nor car?
