Thinking through this selection bias thing a bit I got stumped.
If, at some point in our evolution, women did not have big boobs unless they were gestating or nursing an infant, wouldn't big boobs have indicated that a woman was unavailable for mating? Wouldn't a male have selected a small boobed woman as she would have a better chance of conceiving a child?
There is something seriously weird going on here. I suddenly got some strange music going on, and looked all over the computer to try to identify the source--but i couldn't find the source. However, when i closed the window for A2K here, it stopped. Maybe something from one of the links in this thread?
That's pretty close to what i heard. Very strange.

@Joe Nation,
I never read it, but one of my cousins talked about it a lot. Sorta just like reading.
Similar buzz as with the Castaneda books, except that I would have liked to have read Naked Ape and used to try to leave the room in Castaneda discussions.

Here's the definitive reason for why women have big boobs:

I had a moment's pause when reading the wiki link, in that I first read it that estrogen production was related to continuous big boobs and jumped to the implication that those with big boobs have more estrogen than smaller boobed women - which I'm doubtful on, but don't know. But then I reread and figure the author(s) meant that it was related to the puberty time increase in estrogen production. I figure boob size of women is primarily a genetic thing.
On the body proportion thing -
I've read about the ratio for bounty re women's dimensions and fertility, but anecdotal experience from friends and relatives of my younger years has a couple of them of, let's say, subtle boobs, being pregnant from their first and only time (within a year or more).
What are the data re boob size alone and births?
Obviously, I could look it up, just wondering if anyone knows offhand.

@DrewDad,
But it's hard for a woman to get pregnant while breastfeeding and very nearly impossible for a woman to get pregnant while pregnant. Since women's boobs get bigger when pregnant or nursing wouldn't it tell a man that his chances of mating and conceiving a child would be diminished?
It just seems kind of backwards to me that big boobs would indicate fertility.

@Setanta,
Wouldn't it really indicate her past sexual fertility?
It's interesting for me to see that so many people have put so much thought into this. If Mo hadn't raised the question and made the observation about other mammals I wouldn't have ever given it a second thought.
