Blizzard-Like Storm Forces Road Closures

NEW MEXICO -- A strong winter storm surged through Albuquerque on Monday, dropping several inches of snow and causing trouble for drivers across the state.

Major road closures hit Monday evening when authorities shut down Interstate 25 north of Santa Fe all the way to Raton. Interstate 40 was also shut down from Moriarty west to the Texas border.

Heads up Diane and Osso. This upcoming storm has our West Mesa area in the bulls-eye.

under Weather

Our incoming winter storm will drop into the SW on Thursday and cross the state into Friday. Central areas will be favored for most of the snow. That includes the metro area. There is a catch though. Very gusty east winds will likely shadow most of the city from significant accumulations. Look for 2″-6″ over the west mesa and Rio Rancho. The foothills could well be in the 4″ range. While the heights and valley will only tally an inch or two. Winds could top 50 kts at a gust Thursday night. Please be careful with low temps snow and gutsy winds it will be brutal out there.

We can watch it approach here:

@MMarciano,
We won't be having a white Christmas. In fact, the temperature tomorrow is supposed to be is supposed to be in the 40s; we're just a little bit north of you, here in Canada.

Well, it's 50DegF here in NH today. I'm sure that would feel cold if I was from Florida, but around here... it makes me want to go out in my t-shirt.

@Butrflynet,
Thanks, just saw this from you but knew about the storm a brewin'. Just came back from the store getting the odd essentials. Grocery store less busy than usual on a week day - people not at work must be hitting the malls. It's actually quite pretty out, lovely sky in its wintry way, and not particularly cold (42.6). I was unloading my car with just a lightish turtleneck and jeans, where as yesterday was a knit gloves day for me in the late afternoon.

Called Diane a minute ago to let her know.

I let the dog out this morning and noticed that we have snow on the ground. It's about 1 millimeter deep (maybe less). I think I'll get my shovel out.

Some of the better local photos of the ice, sleet, snow, rain and wind storm we're experiencing in and around Albuquerque this weekend and into the first of the week. Wind chills have been down in the teens and single digits at times.

@ehBeth,
In Farmington, it melted but it's doing it again right now. Probably 150 miles from Albuquerque (crow miles) but they always have worse weather.

The new, little dog girl didn't know what to make of the snow. Now, apparently, she thinks it's pretty cool (figuratively speaking). She wants to run outside, run around in the snow, then run right back in to get warm. Then she wants to go outside again in 30 minutes. Just like a toddler.

We got about an inch of snow overnight, it that much. From the news, it sound like the East Coast of the US got hammered. I hope everyone well and safe.

I can't speak for the rest of the east coast, but all we got was a lot of rain (very warm out right now).

@rosborne979,
Huh . . . we were getting rain last night, but it turned into snow overnight. CBC keeps telling us the US east coast is getting hammered. We were lucky--the got heavy falls of snow to the west and to the east of us--eight to ten inches.

We actually had a bit of snow yesterday, just to the north. The statue of Sam Houston made the backdrop for some large fluffy flakes, in a news photo.

I know, I keep looking at the same news stories and thinking "what the hell are they talking about?".

I can look at the radar and see that most of the eastern seaboard got 1" to 2" of rain. Back from the actual coast it looks like several states are getting some snow on the back edge.

Although I'm sure some areas are getting some nasty weather (normal for this time of year) I do think the News Media is trying to whip up some exciting news for an otherwise slow news cycle. But if OJ Simpson were driving around like a lunatic in a white Bronco, I'm sure this "storm" would never have been mentioned.
