Context:

When I founded Wikipedia, I could have made it into a for-profit company with advertising banners, but I decided to do something different. We’ve worked hard over the years to keep it lean and tight. We fulfill our mission, and leave waste to others.

They are a non profit. They don't sell advertising to sustain itself.

So they are fulfilling their "mission" and leaving all the advertising issues to other info sites.

The mission - improving knowledge and removing misunderstanding to build a civilized global society? In that case, advertising is waste here indeed.
