Ruth Madoff told the CBS programme 60 Minutes the couple took a "bunch of pills" on Christmas Eve in 2008.

"I don't know whose idea it was, but we decided to kill ourselves because it was so horrendous what was happening," she said.

Madoff is serving a 150-year jail sentence after being convicted in 2009.

Ruth Madoff told CBS that the couple had made the suicide pact on Christmas Eve, which - she continued - added to "the whole depression".

"I took what we had, he took more," she said, adding that she did not drink any alcohol with them for fear of vomiting.

Among the pills were Ambien (a sedative) and possibly Klonopin (for seizure and panic disorder treatment).

"We took pills and woke up the next day... It was very impulsive and I am glad we woke up", Mrs Madoff said.

How do you feel about that? I am imagining a poll that gives as the choices

1) It is too bad you did not do a better job

2) you poor thing you

3) ya, right

4) I couldn't care less

I am appalled that American victim culture is so strong that even the Madoffs think that they have a chance of playing the victim card successfully. America is in worse shape than I realized.

@hawkeye10,
#4 I couldn't care less.

Why is CBS interviewing her?

I can't believe anyone cares what her life was or is like.

If she knew enough about what he was doing to want to commit suicide with him, she should be in a jail cell too.

I dont think that has even been answered....many have said that there is no way she could not have known given how close she was to the business. As I recall there was a long time personal secretary of B Madoff who said that there was no doubt in her mind but that Ruth knew everything. The state seems to have agreed to let Ruth go in exchange for Bernie cooperating in telling the state where he had his money hidden. What she has left is no life though, husband in Jail, a son dead, another who will not talk to her, and almost none of her former friends will talk to her. It is not clear what she is living on.

Although I still don't know why CBS wants to interview her, I heard today that she granted the interview as the price she had to pay to have a relationship with her remaining son and grandchild.

Can you imagine being in the position to tell your mother that you won't see her again unless she goes on 60 Minutes?

There is no reason for Mrs. Madoff to do so.

She may as well live a happy life, as well as possible.

She also has agreed to not see Bernie again ( and has not since last DEC), which he says he is fine with. Ruth was told by both boys after Bernie told them the truth that she needed to choose him or them, and she choose Bernie. She now feels that this is part of the reason why one of her boys is dead, and so now she wants to try to make amends to the other. Also, the dead boy's wife just wrote a book where she skewers Ruth, I suspect the Ruth now wants to try to portray herself as human.

@hawkeye10,
Unless I 'm mistaken, no one has accused Ruth
of stealing anything. She has no reason to apologize, nor to feel remorseful.
