what does "in the interval"mean? in "there were recollections of those who ceased in the interval to be denizens of this world."?

An interval is a particular period of time between two events.
This context appears to refer to the memory of the dead, without further context it's hard to tell what interval is being referred to.
I'm guessing it is the interval between class reunions or similar.
