What does "emphasis in the original" mean?

In this paragraph, the author first writes the sentence "This is how Tinklepaugh recorded the experiment in his notes:" and then quotes a paragraph from the notes. At the end of the quotation, "[Emphasis in the original]" is added.

What does this part mean?

Sometimes when quoting someone else's work, an author will emphasize a certain portion--usually by using italics--which he or she considers significant. This is so common, that this author wants the reader to know that the author being quoted used the emphasis, and not he or she who is quoting the work.
