Snow in Maine

So, I plan on moving to Maine when I retire from the military. I m from the south, so this will be a big transition for me and my family. I am trying to do all my research in advance to better prepare myself. I have a few questions.

Where is the best city? How are the summers? Are the winters long and snowy? When it snows, does it stay on the ground all winter? I hear land is cheap there? How cold is the Ocean during the summer? Wht re the highs and lows for Summer and Winter?

Any other informtion would be great. Thanks.

@ehBeth,
We want small town living, but we dont want to drive 1 hour to find a grocery store or restaurant. A good school system, low crime rate. Preferably close to the coast.

@easyeddy2005,
I love Portland ME - it isn't a huge city, but maybe you would like some of the towns in that area. There are alot of pretty seaside towns where you do not have to drive a long distance to go to a grocery store. I'd say almost any of them near the Portland area. And it wouldn't be as snowy as say being inland more or towards the mountains.

And yes the ocean water is cold - you can maybe swim in it in August. Although kids will swim in the ocean pretty much June - August. They don't seem to mind the cold water as much. The summers are beautiful - the winters very cold!

The one negative is many of these seaside homes will have lots of tourists in the summer.

My grandparents lived in Kennebunk, ME. Very beautiful town with close proximity to the ocean with the town, Kennebunkport, (best known for the Bush family summer house).

@easyeddy2005,
The snow in Maine stays mainly on the plain.
