I recently hit up an old friend and she's not doing very well. She's a single mom with two kids by their which aren't old enough to be in school yet. I am sure she's on some government assistance but I would like to make sure she could be getting more. Is there anyone in Maine who is familiar with their social services? I wouldn't even know where to start looking.

@Eric998,
They would not be allowed to talk about her case with you. Her "aid" may be child support or food stamps or some other kind of support, maybe medicaid. You could google Maine Dept. of Social Services to see what's generally available.

@PUNKEY,
Maybe the poster is asking so she can give this info to the single mom? That was my take - not that she was going to call them up herself.

The political atmosphere around medicaid and government assistance is currently "strained", to put it mildly. That said, there are still dedicated helpful social workers within the system.

@Eric998,
I used to live in Lebanon, Maine quite some years ago (I'm a Massachusetts raised person)
From the way I experienced Maine well.... I have a lot of people up that area whom I still know.
I can say this for sure.
Social Services doesn't do jack in that specific county anyways as far as for the welfare of children anyways.
At one point someone who i went to high school with had called me up crying & asking for money for food because she and her boyfriend were smoking crack & not having food in the fridge for her son.

I reported it to Social Services.
The worker whom I was making the report with I explained how there was no food in the house & the mother and father are both going on crack binges.
The Social Services worker replied with
"So what's the problem?"

I'm not sure if there is anything you can do in this specific situation other than be a good friend. But don't get taken advantage of ya know? Be Best to thyself.
