@GracieGirl,
I think of it as yiddish derived, but not sure, maybe just a New York thing.

Roberta will straighten me out.

@wayne,
I don't either.

I can't just say I ever liked Jack Benny.

But, looking back, he was on my screen and I watched him.

I don't know if Jack Benny said it or not. But my mother, grandmother, aunts, and I have said it on more than one occasion.

You say it when you're feeling left out.

Let's say Gracie, Andy, and osso decide to have lunch somewhere together. I'm sitting right there. I say. "What am I? Chopped liver?"

Gracie, if you're gonna use the expression, that's the only way to say it. What am I? Chopped liver?

Although I'm sure that people in Noo Yawk use the expression, the derivation is definitely Jewish. Who else makes chopped liver.

If you're interested in more similar expressions, I suggest you check out this thread: http://able2know.org/topic/10418-1

@Roberta,
When ever I say the chopped liver line, I almost always do it in a very broad New York accent. It just seems to demand it.

@wayne,
In memory, I didn't like or get any of it, tv while irritated. On the other hand I liked a lot of other stuff, involving Hopalong Cassidy. Just impressions.

I didn't like Rochester any more than Benny.

Nuts, I was bitchy even back then.

I don't know about today, but back in the day it was one of the most common expressions in the urban centers of the East Coast. You heard it all the time. Undoubtedly of New York Jewish origin, it was just as popular in Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore etc. Probably in L.A.,too, come to think of it, but I didn't visit the West Coast until I was quite a bit on in years, probably already late 40s, early 50s.
