Whenever my nephew (he's 27) tries to tell me he does not really care for what I am saying he says interesting things like 'Das ist doch Pumpe' or 'das ist ja Kirsche'...
Hmm, I don't quite understand him...

or " Ich pfeife darauf " :-). That´s all expressions.
"das ist doch eine ganz geile sache ", when i was a teenager the word "geil" had a somewhat diffferent meaning as today. hbg
For me as well - getting red
because I'm soooo ashamed
when my nephews started using the word "geil" in the presence of their mother - perhaps as much as ten years ago - i thought i was not hearing right. while i have trouble using it myself, i've gotten used to hear it quite often now when we visit in hamburg . hbg
i have to admit that i have even more trouble using the "f..." word in canada. when we arrived here some 48 years ago you might hear it being used by some rough characters, but now ... i and mrs h are probably the only ones not using it. hbg ... aren't we perfect model citizens ?
Just try to remember, what it was like 30 or so years ago, when a girls said."Das war eine geile Stunde" .... and what it means today.
(30 years ago, it certainly had meant 150 Marks and more - I've heard.)
Times change. Ever heard of eamon?
WHATEVER
DEUTSCHE MARK 150 ? a SAILOR would have been able to buy the whole REEPERBAHN for that amount of money ! hbg >>> go see what you can get for that price now (isn't it great the REEPERBAHN even has a website now ? don't even have to spent "einen groschen" for a visit) >>>
REEPERBAHN
My only experience of "geil" is in the same context that "wicked" and "sick" are used to mean "good" in English.
In Switzerland, I often heard "spielt keine Rolle" as a substitute for "macht nichts"...not quite the same as "whatever" but can anyone comment on whether this is widely used in Germany/Austria?
KP
Yep, demotic :"wurscht" ,"Ich pfeife darauf"/ normal :"spielt keine Rolle ", "keine Ursache" etc.

I was gonna go with "Vhaat-hever".

I put all elder statesmen's names in bold. Right,
Walter?
You do, Joe.
And the best, Thok: when you have been mentioned more than six times, he promotes you on Baby Face's Nelson paylist, too!
