The original heart of pine floors on the bottom levels were taken up piece by piece and laid back down in a herringbone pattern.

The word heart is a part of an expression, "heart of pine." In any tree, there is a noticeably different wood in the center of the trunk known as the heartwood. So, you might have heart of oak, heart of mahogany . . . in this case it is heart of pine. The wood floors were made from wood which came from the heartwood of pine trees.
