How well do you think we know each other?

@Finn dAbuzz,
Surely you know I was joking, about the spitting and even the cane and walker. I am driving to Dallas this fall, to visit relatives. If you really would like to meet, I will PM you then. - I don't have A/C in my truck, plus am too busy to go this summer.

I recall the first time an online friend died. I was seriously blown back by how strong my reactions were. I never met Mary Pope in person, but man, her death hit me hard. It was one of the events that made me think a lot about the relationships that can develop between people behind keyboards. It was also one of the reasons I started meeting online friends in person.

I so regretted not having met Mary Pope. I don't have that regret about cavfancier, Noddy, timberlandko. I'm glad I made the effort to meet them in person. I have real-life memories of some spectacular people that I wouldn't have met without the internet as an initial connection point.

I didn't join Abuzz or Cookstalk with any intent, or expectation, of meeting 'online people' in person but I'm certainly glad I did.

Hey, I don't see my name on that list!! What's up with that, mon?! (g*dl*lsk*&^%% namedropper!)

I think I might be easier to pick out in an crowd. I think this for a few reasons:

1) I've used my actual face as my avatar for some time now. So I've provided some mug shots if you see me on the evening news.
2) Similar to the above, I've posted video of me so my voice and mannerisms are also publicly documented and shared.
3) I've directly chosen to share details about my life. People know where I live, my profession (kind of), details about my family, and even my romantic history.

When it was said that what matters is what you choose to share, I agree. I make a very conscious choice to present myself transparently here. On other forums I've participated in, I have not done so (or to this degree). In many ways this make the type of poster I am, the opposite archetype from the JTT type.

People are not sure of JTT's gender or nationality. I believe JTT is a man. I further believe that the punchline is that JTT is also American. He may not live in the US. I have not formed an opinion on that. I think he may simply resent his nationality, and overcompensates with fervency.

To be opaque still allows for speaking opinions and thoughts in great detail. That is not knowing a person.

ego, perhaps? And, I don't mean that as a negative or ding.

Perhaps internet communities are the id, the ego, and the superego all rolled in together.

Very true. As some of you know I work at home. I'm sometimes in my office for 16 hours, or more, each day. Then, when I leave the office, I'm with my family in the other areas of the house. I don't recall how I stumbled upon A2K -- probably googling something or another -- and found myself reading along, eventually posting when a subject matter came up that I had personal experience dealing with.

With its diverse subject matter and interesting characters A2K became my window to the world. I certainly didn't come here looking for personal connections, but I'm glad I've found some. And, yes, there have been some surprises as well.

Finn is on the short list of folks here that I'd like to meet - mostly because, as he said, I'm sure he's nothing at all like the persona he presents.

@JPB,
One group I'd love to get together are all the Fantasy baseball players, past and present, and go to a game together. Any team, even minors. Hell, the Mexican League would be a trip. I would just love for us all to scream and sing and throw peanuts at one another.

That would depend on the perceptiveness of the person in the real world, the topic at hand, and my inclination to dialog as I might on a forum.

You are so self-effacing that you are one of the few members in this forum I would like to meet in person.

I have a lot to be self-effacing about.

I would like to meet you also, Finn. If you are in Chicago, JPB could arrange something. The Chicago A2Kers (me, joefromchicago, sublime, Gargamel) depend on JPB for all of our gatherings. She is truly amazing.

You're right. That's for advanced users. The trick is to put food in front of us and see which of us eats meat. That's actually why I stopped eating meat: so Cyclo and I would be distinguishable.

Also, I think Cyclo is taller than me on the internet.

@failures art,
Not when I'm sitting down.

Wouldn't it be cool, though, if the allegations were true - if this were the most in-depth con ever ran by a single person, for no perceivable reason, on a message board? The amount of work involved would be stunning - the dedication such a thing would take! It's almost a compliment.

@Cycloptichorn,
The sad thing is, I actually kind of miss Foxfyre. Granted, I'm not sorry for the humble pie she was presented, but watching her eat it and leave was still sad. On non-political threads, she was quite friendly (as is the case with most friction around here).
