GOP Rep’s Press Secretary Compared African Americans to ‘Zoo Animals’ in Facebook Posts

ThinkProgress has obtained a series of Facebook posts from the press secretary for Illinois GOP Rep. Aaron Schock, which contained racially-charged comments about African Americans in his neighborhood.

From ThinkProgress:

Benjamin Cole, a former Baptist pastor and energy industry spokesman, posted a series of videos and comments on October 13, 2013 mocking two African Americans outside his DC apartment. In the first, he compared them to animals escaping from the National Zoo engaged in “mating rituals.” That message included a video of a woman, shouting and seemingly engaged in an argument with someone not visible as she walked. In each of his posts, he used the hashtag “#gentrifytoday.”

The posts were deleted Wednesday. Later that year, Cole described witnessing a shooting of “one of the hood rats on my street” by “another hood rat.”

In a pattern of eyebrow-raising posts about race, Cole posted last month on Facebook about an issue he had with an African American police officer after he was allegedly assaulted by an African American female.

BuzzFeed’s Andrew Kaczynski unearthed some additional Cole posts on Thursday, including a follow-up comment on his post from January about his interaction with a DC policewoman. In it, he wrote that he is “all too worried about the deportables, as you know. I am doing, however, my absolute best to put as many Black criminals who live and loiter on my street behind bars. And if I found any White, Hispanic, Arab, Aleutian, Islander, or other such race causing mischief in my neighborhood, I would pursue their arrest, prosecution, and imprisonment as well.”

Recent Colorado GOP ‘Super PAC’ director pleads guilty
Source: Durango Herald

Tyler Harber, 34, pled guilty on Feb. 12 to coordinated federal election contributions and to making false statements to the Federal Bureau of Investigation regarding the case. Sentencing is scheduled for June 5. He faces a maximum of sentence of five years in prison for each count.

Harber served as executive director of the Colorado Republican Party’s recently-formed Super PAC, or independent expenditure committee, until the party terminated its contract with Harber shortly after the November election.

“We all sometimes make mistakes and put our faith in folks who perhaps we shouldn’t,” said Ryan Call, chairman of the Colorado Republican Party, who appointed Harber...

Colorado Republicans have been working feverishly to establish a first-of-its-kind Super PAC controlled by a state party in Colorado. Watchdogs have been critical of the PAC, concerned that it will open the door to coordination between candidates and an independent expenditure committee. Such PACs are allowed to raise and spend unlimited funds.

Rex missed a political corruption case:

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2015/02/18/incoming-oregon-governor-to-call-for-restoring-trust-as-kitzhaber-steps-down/

Kate Brown was sworn in Wednesday as Oregon's governor following an influence-peddling scandal that prompted the resignation of fellow Democrat John Kitzhaber, who had been the state's longest-serving chief executive before his swift fall from grace.

Brown assumed Oregon's highest office during a ceremony at the state Capitol. Brown, formerly the secretary of state, becomes the first openly bisexual governor in the nation.

Unlike most states, Oregon has no lieutenant governor. Under the state constitution, the secretary of state takes over if a governor steps down or dies.

Kitzhaber, elected to an unprecedented fourth term last year, announced last week that he would step down amid allegations his fiancee used her relationship with him to enrich herself.

Both state and federal officials have launched investigations, which are ongoing despite the resignation. Kitzhaber has denied wrongdoing and has consistently maintained that he and Cylvia Hayes worked hard to avoid conflicts between her public and private roles.

In a speech to the Legislature after her swearing-in, Brown praised Kitzhaber for his contributions to Oregon but also said "we must restore the public's trust."

"There is a great deal of work ahead of us, and I'm ready to roll up my sleeves and get to it," she said.

"We are all keenly aware of the difficult circumstances that brought us to this moment -- circumstances that none of us would have predicted only a short time ago," the new governor said.

"Oregon has been in the national news for all the wrong reasons," she said of the ethics scandal. "That changes starting today."

Brown, a 54-year-old Minnesota native, came to Oregon to attend law school in Portland, the state's largest city, and established a family law practice before her first run for the Legislature.

Kitzhaber handily won re-election in November to a fourth term after surviving the botched rollout of Oregon's online health care exchange, which turned into a national embarrassment.

But the allegations surrounding Hayes' work were more harmful, dominating headlines in the state following his victory.

A series of newspaper reports since October have chronicled Hayes' work for organizations with an interest in Oregon public policy. At the same time she was paid by advocacy groups, she played an active role in Kitzhaber's administration, a potential conflict of interest.

The spotlight on Hayes led to her revealing that she accepted about $5,000 to illegally marry a man seeking immigration benefits in the 1990s. Later, she acknowledged purchasing a remote property with the intent to grow marijuana.

Though questions about Hayes have swirled for months, the pressure on Kitzhaber intensified recently after newspapers raised questions about whether Hayes reported all her income on her tax returns. She has not publicly addressed the allegation and Kitzhaber has declined to.

Kitzhaber, 67, met the 47-year-old Hayes before the 2002 election, when he was governor and she was a candidate for the state Legislature. She lost her race, but they reconnected after Kitzhaber's term ended.

Brown will not serve the full four years that Kitzhaber was elected to. Instead, the state constitution calls for holding a special election, which in this case would occur in November 2016. Brown has not yet said whether she will run for a full term.

One of the millions of Republicans who could lose Obamacare has a question for her governor

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2015/02/17/1364985/-One-of-the-millions-of-Republicans-could-lose-Obamacare-has-a-question-for-her-nbsp-governor

Meet one of the millions of white, employed Southerners who are most likely to lose health insurance if the Supreme Court strikes down the part of Obamacare that provides financial help to customers buying on the federal exchange. She's Erin Meredith, a 37-year-old fifth generation Republican in Texas, who was opposed to Obamacare as just another government handout, she told The Washington Post. Then she got divorced and lost her health insurance. Her job doesn't offer insurance. She was also diagnosed with a rare blood disorder that was leaving her with headaches and fatigue and potentially life-crippling medical bills. At a friend's urging, she checked out Healthcare.gov. For $89 a month, she has coverage.

Now that she has coverage, she doesn't want to lose it. "I can still feed my kids and put gas in my car," she said. "I'm not trying to go to Cancun or carry a Michael Kors bag. I drive a 2009 Mazda, and I'm just trying to make it in my little apartment and not be on government assistance."

She has an important question of her state's political leadership in the event the Supreme Court rules against her.

"If they're not going to participate in Obamacare and I'm not going to have these financial benefits, which will force me to pay $220 a month for coverage, do you know if Greg Abbott, our governor, has any plan to offer something comparable?" Meredith asked in an e-mail. "I understand and support his efforts to put Washington back in its place. I just don't want that to come at the cost of hard-working Texans and their ability to maintain medical coverage."

Jeb Bush Endorsed Airline Whose DC-9 Crashed with 5.5 Tons Of Cocaine Headed for U.S.

((This is a strange little story from 2006-2007 that was being dug into by a muckraking website based in Florida. I can't recall ever hearing about it in the mainstream press. There are even tie-ins to Iran-contra and 9/11. Some things were never fully explained in the first article, such as: How did Jeb Bush's Florida transportation department manage to put a drug-running airline company in charge of airport security?! I suppose it may have something to do with the fact that the plane was later found to have been owned by a major donor to-- President George W. Bush! It just seems to highlight the corruption of the Bushes... and Jeb in particular seems to have a talent for hooking up with crooks who later get busted...))

Jeb Bush Endorsed Drug-Running Florida Airline, FAA Stonewalls Releasing Ownership Records

by Daniel Hopsicker (June 22, 2006)

Less than two weeks before the company declared bankruptcy which owned the DC9 recently busted in Mexico with 5.5 tons of cocaine onboard, Florida Governor Jeb Bush’s Department of Transportation issued a press release touting the firm’s bright future in Homeland Security and announcing it had been selected to be the state’s primary provider of airport security applications.

This is not the first time Jeb Bush has been involved endorsing a drug trafficking aviation company. Nor is it the first time SkyWay Aircraft has been the recipient of unexplained government favoritism.

The Federal Aviation Administration, for example, has been doing SkyWay a major solid…

Two months and eleven days after the firm’s American-registered DC9 was caught carrying 5.5 tons of cocaine in Campeche, Mexico destined for distribution in the U.S., the FAA is still stonewalling requests for the release of what are—by statue— public records of the registration and ownership of the plane.

In a twisted perversion of the U.S. Government’s so-called War on Drugs, the FAA is “Just Saying No” to the American people, who are not allowed to know if an American Drug Lord may have been responsible for the last doomed flight of “Cocaine One.”

According to her site, since so much interaction is happening on Twitter, it's been decided to close the chat and go exclusively in the Twitter format. Probably couldn't find anyone who wanted to keep shoveling the daily piles of **** that were deposited there.
