LA TIMES: "Sen. Joni Ernst learned to 'live within her means' -- on the taxpayer's dime"

"Sen. Joni Ernst learned to 'live within her means' -- on the taxpayer's dime"

It has almost become a cliche that the politicians who bray the loudest about cutting government waste and slashing "entitlements" turn out to have learned what they know about the government trough from the inside.

...........

Now we're at a point where the government will give away everything.
- Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, calling for more self-reliance

The public spotlight might not prove to be Ernst's best friend. The District Sentinel, a Washington, D.C., news co-op, reports that despite her campaign pitch that her parents "taught us to live within our means," her family members collected $463,000 in federal farm subsidies from 1995 through 2009.

The figures come from the Environmental Working Group's authoritative database of farm supports. Most of the money, more than $367,000 in mostly corn subsidies, went to Ernst's uncle, Dallas Culver, and his farm in her home town of Red Oak, Iowa. An additional $38,665 went to her father, Richard Culver, and $57,479 went to her grandfather, Harold Culver, who died in 2003.

.........

This nostalgia for a misty golden past is an essential part of the story. What Ernst fails to acknowledge is that this past never existed. Even in rural communities, the churches were commonly overwhelmed by real need. In urbanized America, the image of family, church and community banding together to lift up the poor, without the government's participation, is pure fantasy.

po
Mouse: What is that all about? How is simply asking the extremely wealthy to pay their fair share of taxes soaking them? How is asking those who have benefited the most from the past 30 years of economic policy to pay up soaking them?

Doesn’t the middle class deserve a break? A chance to share in the wealth of the country they help make great? And what about the poor? Don’t they deserve a break and a chance too?

How ridiculous did the Republicans look sitting there like statues during President Obama’s SOTU speech? They refused to applaud anything that would help the average American. I’m sure that was on orders from the Koch brothers.

Grumpy: Oh, don’t get me started on the Koch brothers. We’ll be here for a month before I finish my rant. You are absolutely right about tax fairness. The conservative side likes to point out that the wealthy pay the majority of the taxes, but they never talk about whether those at the top are paying proportionally the same as the average middle-income workers pay. In some cases under today’s tax system, many of the wealthiest (I’m looking at you, Mitt) pay less than the doorman at their fancy Park Avenue digs or the mechanics that install their car elevators...

@bobsal u1553115,
They just don't get it, Bobsal.

And unfortunately, almost no amount of jack-hammering will get through the concrete preventing that from happening. But I thank you for keeping at it.

I suspect that if things continue down the path we are on, many of the backers of the conservative (hooray for me...screw you) agenda will start to really feel the pinch of their foolish support and finally, perhaps too late, change their ways.

Calls for FDLE investigations grow as Gov. Rick Scott continues to avoid questions

TALLAHASSEE As Gov. Rick Scott on Friday continued to brush off questions about allegations of political meddling made by the state’s former top law enforcement officer, pressure mounted elsewhere in Florida to get answers.

A Land O’Lakes man filed a formal complaint with the FBI asking for an investigation into a series of claims made last week by Gerald Bailey, whom Scott ousted as commissioner of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

“There’s a clear indication of tampering with criminal investigations and FDLE that an impartial investigator needs to take a look at,” said Jim Frissell, a 58-year-old engineer and former Indiana deputy sheriff.

Frissell sent his complaint to Commissioner of Agriculture Adam Putnam, who, along with Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater, said on Thursday that a third party should investigate Bailey’s allegations, which included charges that Scott’s office or campaign pressured him to fudge details in a criminal investigation, shuttle campaign workers in state vehicles, expedite a criminal investigation of a possible Scott appointee and craft Scott’s campaign platform on law enforcement.

Whose God's laws shall we use? The largest religion in the world is also the most divided. Many "Christian" religions do not even use the Bible as their source for faith and practice. The Founding fathers understood this but it seem Mike Huckabee does not have the slightest inkling. Huckabee brings religion and government to another level of stupidity.
