Fox "News" reality check! AIDS reached America in 1981, but Fox idol Reagan's deep-seated homophobia meant he LITERALLY did not address the issue until 1987, when 36,000 Americans had been diagnosed, nearly 21,000 had already died, and the disease had spread to 113 countries. By comparison, Pres. Obama has been on top of the current Ebola outbreak since day ONE.

@mysteryman,
Where did you learn that fairy tale?

History of the United States' Minimum Wage

The minimum wage is a cornerstone of the United States' labor system, and has been a cutting-edge labor law topic among employers and workers alike for decades. However, the United States hasn't always had a minimum wage. Before the minimum wage was introduced during the Great Depression of the 1930s, there was no national minimum wage, or indeed any legislation to protect workers from exploitation. Because of this lack of regulation tens of thousands of workers were routinely exploited in sweatshops and factories, forced to work in horrible conditions and for pennies a week.

Early attempts by labor unions to create a mandatory minimum wage were ruled unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court on the grounds that they "restricted the worker's right to set the price for his own labor". This allowed employers to continue exploiting their workers through the Great Depression of the 1930s, when incredible demand for jobs caused wages to drop even further to an all-time low. With poverty becoming a huge national issue, President Franklin D. Roosevelt promised to constitutionally protect American workers as a key part of his 1936 re-election campaign.

After winning the historical 1936 election by a landslide, President Roosevelt signed the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) into law in early 1938. The FLSA introduced sweeping regulations to protect American workers from being exploited, and created a mandatory federal minimum wage of 25 cents an hour in order to maintain a "minimum standard of living necessary for health, efficiency and general well-being, without substantially curtailing employment". This new law was welcomed as a godsend by the thousands of workers who were previously forced to work for a fraction of that amount, but was violently opposed by many employers and fiscal conservatives who argued that a minimum wage could hurt employers. In addition to establishing a mandatory nation-wide minimum wage the Fair Labor Standards Act introduced many other worker's protection laws still in effect today, including banning child labor and establishing workplace safety statutes.

In the years since the FLSA was introduced, the federal minimum wage was revised by Congress every few years to account for inflation and the ever rising cost of living (although, in the years after the FLSA was introduced, Congress has actually reduced the Minimum Wage several times). In 1997, President Bill Clinton introduced legislation allowing individual states to set their own minimum wage rates, and as a result several states have minimum wages that are higher then the federal minimum wage (see list of state minimum wage rates).

Today, there is contnuing debate over whether the Federal Minimum Wage (currently $7.25/hr) is truly a fair "living wage". Labor activists call on Congress to raise minimum wage, while others point out the negative effects this could have on the economy (read more about the pros and cons of raising the minimum wage).

The minimum wage and labor law in general has come a long way throughout its 80+ year history, but both can certainly continue to be improved on by the actions of American workers and lawmakers. Want to help change labor law? Contact your senator and let them know what you think at www.senate.gov.

Why do you hate the due process clause of the Bill of Rights part of the Constitution: jury of peers, right to cross examine, right to counsel? Don't you think some sort of finding of guilt should come before you, a slacker, gets to hang him? If it were so cut and dried, why hasn't he faced some sort of tribunal or process?

@RexRed,
"But 30,000 deaths by guns in the US is not urgent."
That translates to over 82 deaths per day. 5? And our government is doing everything in their power to limit the spread of ebola. Why not gun deaths?

@cicerone imposter,
Because most Americans don't want it. They want their guns and if your kids gets shot then that's just the price of freedom and another reason to arm your kids. Because nothing stops a shooting situation like throwing in more guns.

With Ebola there is no upshot.

The Smoking Ebola Gun: Rand Paul’s Senate Hold Is Why The Nation Has No Surgeon General

http://www.politicususa.com/2014/10/17/blame-harry-rand-paul-put-hold-surgeon-general-nomination.html

The Republican obstruction strategy of “stall and block” is coming back to haunt Republicans in many ways, not the least of which is the country’s realization that we have no Surgeon General as we face the Ebola crisis.

But of course, politicians don’t like to take responsibility for their tactics, so the Republicans’ new talking point to get around taking responsibility for their obstruction of President Obama, his entire administration and indeed, our entire federal government, is that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) could call for a vote any time to confirm the nomination for the Surgeon General....

Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) put a hold on the November 2013 nomination after the NRA objected to the nominee. Krystal Ball and Anne Thompson reported for MSNBC:

Murthy’s nomination has been held up by Republicans and a few red state Democrats due to this surprisingly controversial stance: He believes that guns can impact your health. Well, to be fair, this conservative coalition is not troubled by his stance, so much as they are fearful of the NRA, which decided to try to scuttle Murthy’s confirmation. The NRA wrote a strongly worded letter, Rand Paul put a hold on the nomination, and Red State Democrats begged Harry Reid to not force them to vote. It’s funny that the strongly worded letters of ordinary citizens don’t seem to have quite the same effect.

"Senate hold"? Is that another word for "godawful rug"?

@bobsal u1553115,
That's all part and parcel of why our government will never work; today or after the November 4th elections. It's broken, folks! It can't be repaired by replacing a few chairs with new people.

Even with the promise of a 100% turnover, I'm still not convinced Washington can be fixed.

Smiling black woman next to Corbett on his website was Photoshopped
http://media.philly.com/images/600*108/20140817-Corbett-image.jpg

It's no secret that things haven't always gone smoothly for Gov. Corbett in his effort to woo minority voters in Pennsylvania. Most famously, the one-term GOP governor -- who's in the fight of his life for re-election -- last year told editors of Philadelphia-based Al Dia at a roundtable that he didn't have any Latinos in his cabinet, adding: "If you can find us one, please let us know."

Now, according to a report going viral tonight on social media, Corbett's re-election campaign found an African-American woman to stand next to the governor on his website photos.

Not an actual woman. According to Buzzfeed, the black woman who gazes at Corbett was Photoshopped from a stock picture.

If they still need to steal the vote, we need to vote. More than ever.

2 Republican candidates agree to pay Clean Elections fines
Source: Capitol Media Services, AZ Daily Star, Tucson.com

PHOENIX — The two Republican candidates running for Arizona Corporation Commission avoided further inquiry into their campaign finances Thursday by each agreeing to pay $1,000 fines.

Tom Forese and Doug Little essentially acknowledged that they committed to spending money on their joint campaign before they actually had the cash. That is a violation of election laws.

They also acknowledged that they did not properly report money they spent on such things as campaign signs and petition circulators.

The deal was approved by a 3-1 vote by the Citizens Clean Elections Commission after Tom Collins, the panel’s executive director, recommended it to them. He called it an “appropriate resolution” of the issue.
